The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has developed the Wisconsin Evaluation of Educational Coaches as a way to meet the needs and requests of educational coaches from across the state for a meaningful and relevant evaluation system for individual professional growth. Districts are invited to pilot the coach evaluation system during the 2019-20 school year.
Coaching is intentional, job-embedded professional learning designed to support teachers and staff in implementing practices with fidelity. Coaching takes place after training and happens while practitioners are doing their work.
Similar to the Wisconsin Educator Effectiveness System which evaluates teachers, administrators, and others in professional staff roles, the Wisconsin Evaluation of Educational Coaches is designed as a performance-based continuous improvement system. Information gleaned from the pilot is not intended to be used to make high-stakes decisions. The coach evaluation processes and rubric are intended to provide meaningful and relevant feedback for coaches to support guided, individualized, self-determined professional growth and development.
Districts must register to participate in the Wisconsin Coach Evaluation pilot process. By registering, districts agree to the following:
- Evidence collected during the pilot processes using the coach evaluation pilot materials is not to be used for high-stakes decision-making (particularly HR decisions).
- Pilot processes are to be completed by a sampling of coaching staff in the district and their evaluator(s).
- Participants will complete all pilot processes on scheduled timelines throughout the pilot timeframe (September 2019 - March 2020).
- All pilot coaches and evaluators must provide feedback to DPI and the coach evaluation development workgroup at regular intervals throughout the pilot timeframe, mostly through online survey format.
Revisions will be made based on feedback from districts engaged in the pilot process and prior to full release for the 2020-2021 school year.
