Wisconsin Standards for Theatre

Monday, July 23, 2018

The public commenting period is now open for the draft of Wisconsin Standards for Theatre. The public is invited to view the draft standards and then participate through the public comment survey to provide feedback. The survey is open for a 30-day period.

In April 2018, The State Superintendent’s Standards Review Council recommended rewriting theatre standards. Shortly after, a writing committee of experts from classroom teachers, school leaders, higher education, and business owners was formed to develop the new standards.

Presenting the draft of Wisconsin’s Standards for Theatre to the public is just one part of the process for Wisconsin academic standards review and revision. During the public review, the standards are presented to legislative standing committees for review and comment as well. Once the 30-day period is complete, the standards continue through the review process, which includes assessing public comments, conducting revision, and presenting the revised standards to the state superintendent with recommendations. At that point, the standards will either be referred back to the writing committee for further revision or adopted. Authority to adopt academic standards rests with locally elected school boards.

Co-Chairs of the Theatre Standards Writing Committee:

Looking Forward

On July 13, the DPI issued notices of intent to review standards for world language and dance. The public is invited to submit comments or information regarding the need for standards revision in these content areas. All comments received within 30 days of these notices will be reviewed and considered by the Standards Review Council.
