MADISON — State Superintendent Tony Evers will deliver his annual State of Education address at noon, Thursday, Sept. 15, in the State Capitol in Madison.
Mary Randall, superintendent for the Bloomer School District, will give the welcome for the State of Education program. The Beloit Memorial Jazz Orchestra will present “Royal Garden Blues” as a prelude to the event. The group, from Beloit Memorial High School, is under the direction of Chris Behrens. Xang Hang, senior at Lincoln High School in Manitowoc and 2016 Badger Boys State Superintendent, will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Jonathan Overby, lyric baritone and host for Wisconsin Public Radio’s “Higher Ground,” will sing the national anthem. Rebecca Jacobson, 2016 Badger Girls State Superintendent, will introduce Evers. Jacobson is a senior at Princeton High School. The Volk Field Combat Readiness Training Center Honor Guard will provide a color guard for the program. The postlude, “Blues in Frankie’s Flat,” will be played by the Beloit Memorial Jazz Orchestra.
Following the State of Education address, Evers will present Friend of Education awards to former State Senators Timothy F. Cullen of Janesville and Dale Schultz of Richland Center; the Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association; Journey House, located in Milwaukee; Ronald Morris of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay; and the Simpson Street Free Press of Madison. The state superintendent also will recognize Wisconsin’s four Teachers of the Year for the 2016-17 school year: Sarah Breckley, Reedsburg Area High School; Pamela Gresser of Hatley, Rothschild Elementary School in the D.C. Everest Area School District; Chris Gleason, Patrick Marsh Middle School in the Sun Prairie Area School District; and Barbara VanDoorn of Tony, Lake Holcombe School.
