MADISON — The Department of Public Instruction announced today that Wisconsin received a multi-million dollar federal grant to aid in improving access and collaboration in its public libraries.

As part of the Library Services and Technology Act’s 2020 Grants to States program, Wisconsin received a $3,011,929 allocation to achieve goals prioritized in the 2018-22 Five-Year Plan. The funding is an increase from the awards Wisconsin received during 2019 ($2,917,382) and 2018 ($2,879,721).

“Local libraries are at the heart of the communities they serve, and are an important resource for learning and providing opportunities,” State Superintendent Carolyn Stanford Taylor said. “These federal grant funds will help Wisconsin’s libraries improve partnerships with the communities they serve, and continue providing equitable and inclusive services.”

Funding will specifically be used to further collaboration between public libraries and school libraries, implement recommendations to improve services and access for library visitors, and continue providing statewide services such as the interlibrary loan program and individualized consultation.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services, which administers the Library Services and Technology Act, is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s libraries and museums. In 2018, the DPI, as Wisconsin’s State Library Administrative Agency, published a comprehensive report presenting the needs, goals, activities, and assurances for administering the state’s Library Services and Technology Act.
