AGRICULTURAL STRUCTURES Agriculture Mechanization/Engineering and Technical Support Services Agricultural Structures (5-10 days) This unit deals with the improvement, maintenance, construction, and design of agricultural buildings. Topics include career opportunities, agricultural building arrangements, types of construction, systems of handling agricultural products, space requirements, utility needs, and cost analysis. Objectives To acquaint students with employment information and career opportunities in the agricultural structures industry To give students opportunities to examine ways to evaluate agricultural building arrangements To develop student understanding of the basic aspects of building construction and design To give students opportunities to examine various material handling systems used in agricultural building construction and design Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain current employment information such as job descriptions, job availability, personal and educational requirements, working conditions, opportunity for advancement, and other factors relative to potential employment in the field of agricultural structures and materials handling and relate it to their personal needs and aspirations; explain the principles of organizing agricultural building arrangements and be able to apply these principles to an actual farm situation; identify the types of construction common to various agricultural housing needs; identify and compare types of feed, grain, roughage, waste disposal, and milk handling equipment; identify the space requirements for agricultural livestock housing and crop and machinery storage using resource data; determine the utility needs for the various types of agricultural construction; and estimate costs for building livestock housing and crop and machinery storage, including installation of materials and handling equipment, using current construction prices. Subject Matter (Basic skills integration areas are shown in brackets following title.) Careers - Current and future employment needs - Job descriptions - Training requirements - Working conditions - Opportunities for advancement - Other factors Agricultural building arrangements - Placement - Rearrangements for efficiency - Building and zoning codes Types of building construction - Materials - Design - Trends - Drainage regulations - Building codes and county ordinances Systems of handling farm products - Feed, grain, and roughage distribution and drying - Waste disposal - Milking systems Space requirements [Mathematics] - Livestock housing - Crops storage - Machinery storage Utility needs - Electrical - Ventilation - Heating - Plumbing - Codes Cost analysis [Mathematics] - Construction costs - Equipment costs Motivational Activities Take field trips to different types of construction and handling systems. Invite resource people to give class presentations on materials handling equipment and types of construction. View films, videotapes, and slides on topics related to this unit.
