CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN AGRICULTURE Cross-Cluster Career Opportunities in Agriculture (10-15 days) This unit deals with career opportunities related to agriculture. Topics include world agriculture, infrastructure, marketing interrelationships, career development strategies related to desired lifestyle, and individual aspirations and abilities. Objectives To acquaint students with employment and career opportunities in the agriculture industry To familiarize students with the seven clusters of agricultural employment (see "Subject Matter") To increase student comprehension of the world's need for agriculture To develop student understanding of the infrastructure that supports production agriculture at the national, state, and local levels To increase student understanding of how local agribusiness relates to agribusiness at the national and state levels To provide students with information on strategies for developing a career in agriculture To enhance student understanding of job preparation procedures To assist students in relating personal, career, and educational choices to desired lifestyle Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain current employment information such as job descriptions, job availability, personal and educational requirements, working conditions, opportunity for advancement, and other factors relative to potential employment in the agriculture industry and relate it to their personal needs and aspirations; recognize what is meant by the terms agriculture and agribusiness; explain why agriculture is considered the largest industry in the United States; identify several clusters of agricultural employment; describe the distribution and significance of agriculture on a world market level; understand the variety, complexity, and size of the agricultural enterprise in the United States; trace the channels linking agricultural producers to consumers; outline the nature and distribution of agriculture in Wisconsin; describe the marketing and distribution systems for agricultural products in Wisconsin; describe the nature and extent of agriculture in the local area; identify several basic principles for planning a career in agriculture; understand and apply job preparation procedures; list sources of information on agricultural careers; and explain the relationship between occupations, education, and lifestyle.
