The topics included are career opportunities, anatomy, breed identification, feeding, housing, health, fitting and showing, herd development and improvement, and marketing of dairy goat products. Objectives To acquaint students with employment information and career opportunities in the dairy goat industry To develop student understanding of the nature and distribution of the dairy goat industry in the United States To provide students with practice in identifying the various dairy and angora goat breeds To develop student understanding of goat anatomy and organ functions To provide students with instruction in evaluating and selecting breeding and replacement stock To develop student understanding of goat breeding systems and sire selection strategies To facilitate student inquiry into approved practices for managing dairy and angora goat herds To provide students with information on how to produce high-quality goat milk and fiber To introduce students to procedures for marketing goat products successfully Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain current employment information such as job descriptions, job availability, personal and educational requirements, working conditions, opportunity for advancement, and other factors relative to potential employment in the dairy goat industry and relate it to their personal needs and aspirations; describe the history and current status of the goat industry; identify several food and fiber products derived from goats; name and describe the functions of parts of a goat's anatomy; identify factors that affect the quality of milk and fiber, and identify management strategies for each; outline procedures for properly fitting and showing goats; milk a dairy goat correctly; shear an angora goat correctly; evaluate a goat for of herd replacement or breeding stock; develop an efficient feeding program for goats; perform acceptable management skills correctly; describe the proper housing and equipment requirements for raising goats; explain how to maintain a healthy herd; summarize production and price trends in the goat industry; and describe methods of marketing goats and goat products.
