Topics include career opportunities, identifying flower varieties, developing floral arrangements, and operating a floral business. Objectives To acquaint students with employment information and career opportunities in the floriculture industry To increase student awareness of the different types of retail floral operations To develop student understanding of the history of the floriculture industry To provide students with guidelines for selecting an appropriate inventory for a floral shop To enhance student understanding of procedures for purchasing, caring for, and selling high quality cut flowers To give students instruction and practice in the design and creation of appropriate floral arrangements for various occasions To prepare students to conduct routine floral shop customer transactions To provide instruction in the design and creation of appropriate corsages for different occasions To review procedures involved in the design and preparation of a wedding package appropriate for different types of weddings To illustrate how to select, design, and create appropriate floral arrangements for funerals To prepare students to perform typical tasks in the floriculture industry in a safe and efficient manner Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain current employment information such as job descriptions, job availability, personal and educational requirements, working conditions, opportunity for advancement, and other factors relative to potential employment in the floriculture industry and relate it to their personal needs and aspirations; identify and explain the advantages and disadvantages of different floral outlets; explain how the floriculture industry developed; identify and describe the tools and materials used in flower arranging; determine the types of floral containers used for various arrangements; identify specific types of flowers used in floral arrangements; care for cut flowers; assemble, calculate, and complete billing invoices; and use proper safety techniques.
