WIS240 FOREST SCIENCE 02/26/1990 08:04 AM D1 379 Lines Agriculture Resources Management Forest Science (90 days) This unit deals with forest science. Topics include career opportunities, tree identification, measurement of land and forest products, land description, nursery management, propagation, site selection, disease and insect control, harvesting procedures, equipment and safety practices, marketing, multiple-use concept, forest laws and policies, and the FFA Forestry Contest. Objectives To acquaint students with employment information and career opportunities in the forest industry To familiarize students with the characteristics, habitat and commercial use of common tree species To inform students of forestry skills and techniques To enhance students awareness of good woodland and forest management factors To emphasize to students the importance of nursery management To familiarize students with methods of propagation To acquaint students with tree planting factors and techniques To increase student comprehension of harvesting and marketing wood products To inform students about forestry land use options and forest land policies and programs To acquaint students with the FFA Forestry Contest Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain current employment information such as job descriptions, job availability, personal and educational requirements, working conditions, opportunity for advancement, and other factors relative to potential employment in the forest industry and relate it to their personal needs and aspirations; identify the tree species common to the area; recognize the characteristics of tree species used for correct identification; discuss the principles of plant growth and reproduction, name the parts of a plant, and describe their function; define and explain the "multiple-use"concept in forestry; diagram and explain the different harvest methods used to ensure reproduction of desired species; list different ways in which seedlings are produced; identify site and soil requirements for successful tree propagation; list and describe the safety measures in harvesting a tree and cutting it into desired lengths; explain different types of logging methods; give the size specification and species for types of cut forest products; identify insect pests common to trees; describe diseases common to trees; arrive at the correct compass bearings and size in acres for a designated forest area; develop a fire protection plan; identify federal and state policies and programs that affect woodlot and forest establishment and management; explain the history of forestry in your region; develop a marketing plan for forest products; describe the principles of Christmas tree production; identify tools and equipment used in forest harvest operations; and describe the FFA Forestry Contest. Invite the following resource people to give class presentations: - a tree farm forester - a consulting forester - chain saw company representative - county forester View films, videotapes, and slides on topics related to forestry. Learning Activities Participate in a Supervised Agricultural Experience program. Demonstrate the safe use of a chain saw. Plant or prune trees in a nearby wood lot or school forest. Demonstrate how to sharpen an ax. Identify trees surrounding the school. Estimate the number of board feet in standing timber. Select and mark trees for cutting. Develop plans for applying the multiple-use concept to a nearby forest. Conduct experiments with photosynthesis or seed germination. Develop a walking trail through a forest and identify its trees.
