WIS251 GARDENING 02/26/1990 08:06 AM D1 377 Lines Agriculture Science/Production Management Gardening (5-15 days) This unit deals with gardening and gardening practices. Topics include career opportunities, planning and preparing the garden site, properly planting the garden, and caring for the garden during the growing season. Objectives To acquaint students with employment information and career opportunities in the gardening industry To develop student appreciation of the economic, vocational, and other rewarding values of gardening To introduce students to procedures and principles used in planning gardens To familiarize students with procedures for selecting and planting garden sites To provide students with instruction in the various management practices used to maintain and care for gardens To develop student understanding of harvesting and storage procedures for garden produce Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain current employment information such as job descriptions, job availability, personal and educational requirements, working conditions, opportunity for advancement, and other factors relative to potential employment in the gardening industry and relate it to their personal needs and aspirations; develop an appropriate home vegetable garden plan given their specific needs; demonstrate proper procedures for preparing a garden seedbed for planting; explain procedures for adjusting soil pH and fertility to correct ranges; select appropriate vegetable varieties for the garden; demonstrate a familiarity with procedures used to start seedlings and plant the garden; apply common cultural practices used in gardening, including watering, fertilizing, weather protection, supporting and training plants, and controlling weeds, pests, and disease; explain procedures for harvesting and storing vegetable crops; and demonstrate the proper procedure for taking a soil test.
