Topics include career opportunities, breeds, tack and equipment, safe handling procedures, horse health maintenance, nutrition, reproduction, and judging techniques. Objectives To acquaint students with employment information and career opportunities in the horse industry To review the history of the horse and the horse industry To develop student understanding of the uses and functions of horses To increase student ability to perform routine stable management practices To provide students with instruction in the proper use of basic horse terminology To acquaint students with the basics of equine anatomy To provide students with training in the judging of various halter and equitation classes To familiarize students with the use and care of horse equipment To increase student understanding of basic training practices for horses at halter or under saddle To acquaint students with expenses of owning a horse Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain current employment information such as job descriptions, job availability, personal and educational requirements, working conditions, opportunity for advancement, and other factors relative to potential employment in the horse industry and relate it to their personal needs and aspirations; understand and appreciate the uses of horses; perform stable management practices such as recordkeeping, grooming, feeding, and parasite control; identify horse color and markings and other physical characteristics for registration purposes; define horse anatomy and industry terminology; judge halter and equestrian classes; list various types, correct use, and proper care of horse equipment; perform basic training practices for horses at halter or under saddle; estimate the cost of owning and stabling a horse; understand the history of the horse industry by noting the original species and modern breeds; explain the breeding systems and practices associated with horse reproduction management; and understand the digestive system of a horse and formulate rations accordingly.
