WIS302 LANDSCAPING 02/26/1990 08:40 AM D1 501 Lines Agriculture Resources Management Landscaping (10-20 days) This unit deals with the management and care of landscaping and its related fields. Topics include career opportunities, landscape design, construction materials, plant material usage, economic analysis, and landscape maintenance. Objectives To acquaint students with employment information and career opportunities in the landscape area To provide students with instruction in planning and creating a landscape design To assist students to prepare cost estimates for a given landscape design To increase student understanding of the uses of various landscape structures, materials, and plants To help students increase their skills in identifying commonly used landscaping plants To provide students with practice in establishing trees, shrubs, and other landscape plants using recommended procedures To develop student understanding of basic landscape maintenance practices, including mulching, pruning, controlling weeds, and providing winter protection Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain current employment information such as job description, job availability, personal and educational requirements, working conditions, opportunity for advancement, and other factors relative to potential employment in the landscaping industry and relate it to their personal needs and aspirations; follow the steps of creative thinking as applied to landscape design; complete a site analysis following proper procedure; use the proper graphic symbols for all of the elements in a landscape design; fill out a client's family inventory checklist; complete a rough design of an area using an overlay, doing goose-egg planning, laying out traffic patterns, and charting the climatic factors of the site; determine the cost of establishing a landscape design; explain how to use plant materials in the landscape such as flowers, ground covers, shrubs, and trees; explain the advantages and disadvantages of the different materials used for mulching; demonstrate the pruning techniques for different plant materials; and demonstrate the different methods of winter protection of the plant material in a landscape. Prepare a list of types of materials that can be used for walkways. Collect specimens of different textures of plant material. Design a bed using annual and perennial plants.
