WIS362 PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE 02/26/1990 08:55 AM D1 312 Lines Cross-Cluster Parliamentary Procedure (8-20 days) This unit deals with the conduct of meetings and the proper use of parliamentary terms. The use of simulated meetings also shall be used to give students hands-on experience. Objectives To assist students in comprehending a need for a procedure that enables the business of an organization to be transacted in an orderly and effective manner To familiarize students with the accepted language that will enable them to participate effectively in a meeting. To help students distinguish between the various types of motions and their proper use to include the order of precedence To acquaint students with the components included in a business meeting agenda and the order in which they should be addressed To help students to identify parliamentary terms and assist them in properly using the terms at a meeting Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain the purpose of rules governing how meetings and public debates are conducted; list the officers of an organization and their duties; prepare an agenda for a meeting; call a meeting to order; introduce a motion as an item of business; amend a main motion; refer an item of business to a committee; stop or limit debate; postpone indefinitely and definitely; move the previous question; lay and take an item of business on the table; call for a point of order; demonstrate an appeal from the decision of the chair; demonstrate how to withdraw a motion; use a parliamentary procedure to inquire or request for information; call for a division of the house; demonstrate how to ask for a suspension of the rules; rise to a question of privilege; demonstrate the proper way to reconsider a motion; rescind a motion passed at an earlier meeting; and adjourn a meeting.
