Topics include career opportunities, the anatomy of fowl, management techniques, incubation, and marketing. Objectives To acquaint students with employment information and career opportunities in the poultry industry To provide students with guidelines for selecting and culling to maintain a productive laying flock To develop student understanding of poultry anatomy To facilitate student inquiry into the incubation and hatching process To assist students to develop a comprehensive management plan for a specific poultry operation To acquaint students with the marketing of eggs and poultry meat Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain current employment information such as job descriptions, job availability, personal and educational requirements, working conditions, opportunity for advancement, and other factors relative to potential employment in the poultry industry and relate it to their personal needs and aspirations; list the major poultry-producing states and counties in Wisconsin; list at least four main species of poultry; identify at least four main breeds or varieties of at least four species of poultry and their main use; identify parts of the various body systems from drawings or specimens and explain their function; determine the outcome of a specified mating of poultry by using genetics; describe embryo development and identify management and hatchery factors influencing hatchability; outline a management program (i.e., feeding, housing, equipment, and disease and parasite control) for growing broilers, replacement pullets, and the laying flock; outline a complete management program for the production of turkeys, ducks, and geese; distinguish a laying hen from one that is not in production; list the market grades of poultry meat and eggs and explain the factors determining these grades; summarize the production and price trends in poultry and eggs; and describe the methods of marketing poultry and eggs.
