WIS399 SAFETY IN AGRICULTURE 02/26/1990 09:04 AM D1 323 Lines Agriculture Mechanization/Engineering and Technical Support Services Safety in Agriculture (5-15 days) This unit deals with agricultural safety. Topics include career opportunities, attitudes and philosophies, potential occupational hazards, and a working knowledge of preventative measures and first aid procedures. Objectives To acquaint students with employment information and career opportunities regarding safety in agriculture To enhance student awareness of the importance of a "think safety first" attitude To demonstrate safety measures in school and agricultural settings To explain in detail specific agricultural hazards and precautionary steps To create an awareness of immediate and long-term effects of an accident on the victim and others involved Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain current employment information such as job descriptions, job availability, personal and educational requirements, working conditions, opportunity for advancements, and other factors relative to potential employment in the agricultural safety field and relate it to their personal needs and aspirations; appreciate the philosophy of safety; incorporate a philosophy of safety that must be practiced at all times; identify potential hazards in agribusiness occupations and determine corrective and preventative measures; comprehend knowledge of safety in the classroom, laboratory, and in other instructional settings; and better understand accident implications and how to deal most effectively with accidents. Interview a victim of a farm accident. Post bulletin boards featuring safety tips. Invite the following resource people to give class presentations: - a firefighter from the local fire department to give a demonstration in fire safety, including how to use a fire extinguisher, - an insurance representative to address how safety precautions affect insurance premiums, - an emergency medical technician (EMT) to give a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) demonstration, - a law enforcement officer to speak on driving safety, - and a representative from the local electric company to discuss the safe use of electrical power. Arrange for the class to attend a tractor rollover demonstration or a safety seminar. Arrange for the Wisconsin State Patrol to present its seatbelt demonstration. Learning Activities Participate in a Supervised Agricultural Experience program. Develop a safety inspection program for farm or home. Design a school safety program for an elementary school. Participate in a tractor operator contest. Prepare an exhibit about home or agricultural safety. Demonstrate how to use hearing protection equipment or fire extinguishers.
