WIS411 SMALL ANIMAL HEALTH CARE 02/26/1990 09:07 AM D1 405 Lines Agriculture Science/Production Management Small-Animal Health Care (45-90 days) This unit deals with the area of small-animal technician and management. Topics include careers and employment opportunities, laws and ethics, administrative duties, client relations, animal housing, medical terminology, animal care and handling techniques, and the home as it relates to the care of small animals. Objectives To acquaint students with employment information and career opportunities in the small-animal health care industry To enhance student ability to evaluate and choose domestic animals for various uses To acquaint students with the anatomy and physiology of domestic animals To increase student understanding of domestic animal management practices, including nutrition, reproduction, health maintenance, and housing To provide students with examples of recordkeeping systems for domestic animals To develop student proficiency in the use of veterinary terminology Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain current employment information such as job descriptions, job availibility, personal and educational requirements, working conditions, opportunity for advancement, and other factors relative to potential employment in the small-animal health care industry and relate it to their personal needs and aspirations; understand the domination humans have over small and large animals; create an understanding of the roles of veterinarians and animal technicians; list the laws and ethics governing animal technicians; employ a knowledge of administrative duties; understand public and client relations as it pertains to the animal technician's career; use veterinary medicine terminology; undertake small-animal housing management; demonstrate proper animal handling and restraint methods; list animal care equipment and its uses; identify symptoms of disease; explain therapy techniques; demonstrate animal-care techniques; and prepare home-care instructions.
