WIS448 SOYBEANS 02/26/1990 09:16 AM D1 277 Lines Agriculture Science/Production Management Soybeans (10-20 days) This unit deals with the production of soybeans. Topics include career opportunities, the importance of soybeans, seed selection, growth, production techniques, harvesting, production economics, and marketing factors and methods. Objectives To acquaint students with employment information and career opportunities in the soybean science industry To create student awareness of the importance of soybeans as a food stuff and feed for livestock To provide students with a basis for selecting an appropriate soybean variety for a given area To develop student understanding of approved soybean production techniques To create student understanding of the factors that affect yields and costs in soybean production To develop student understanding of soybean marketing methods Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain current employment information such as job descriptions, job availability, personal training requirements, working conditions, opportunity for advancement, and other factors relative to potential employment in the soybean industry and relate it to their personal needs and aspirations; understand the importance of soybeans as a protein energy source; list and explain various uses of soybeans; choose recommended varieties for their area; identify and label soybean plant parts; explain the function of each plant part; describe the changes that take place during each growth stage; explain the pollination and fertilization process in soybeans; list the macro- and micronutrients required by soybeans and the functions of each; explain why it's beneficial to inoculate and the procedures involved; compare soil preparation methods for soybean production; identify agricultural implements used in soybean production; select proper seeding methods; contrast the methods of herbicide application; compare various insecticides and herbicides recommended for soybean production; determine when to harvest soybeans and choose an appropriate drying process; calculate the cost of producing a bushel of soybeans, machinery cost per acre, and labor and management wage per acre; calculate yield in bushels per acre, including seeding rate, plant population, fertilizer rate, and harvesting loss; discuss the factors restricting soybean yields and corrective measures for each; contrast methods of soybean marketing; describe the effect of photoperiod response in soybean varietal selection; and compare various methods and implements for producing soybeans. Post charts, posters, and bulletin board displays featuring soybeans. View films, videotapes, and slides on topics related to this unit. Display food products made from soybeans. Learning Activities Participate in a Supervised Agricultural Experience program. Student the characteristics of different varieties of soybeans. Collect and prepare mounts of - healthy soybean plants and seeds, - diseased plants, - and insects that attack soybeans. Monitor the market's cash and futures prices for soybeans and plot them on a graph. Perform germination tests on different varieties of soybean seeds. Set up demonstration plots using different seedbed preparations, pesticides, and fertilizer applications. Record and report the results.
