WIS467 SWINE SCIENCE 02/26/1990 09:22 AM D1 321 Lines Agriculture Science/Production Management Swine Science (10-20 days) This unit deals with factors involved in swine science. Topics include career opportunities, development of the swine industry, systems of swine production, breeding stock management, feeding and nutrition, swine facilities and their utilization, management for swine health, and marketing swine. Objectives To acquaint students with employment information and career opportunities in the swine production industry To increase student understanding of systems and procedures used to manage swine herds To increase student awareness of swine breeding systems and selection To acquaint students with swine nutrition and feeding requirements To give students opportunities to examine the housing facility needs for swine herds To provide students with information on methods of marketing swine Competencies At the conclusion of this unit, students will be able to explain current employment information such as job descriptions, job availability, personal and educational requirements, working conditions, opportunity for advancement, and other factors relative to potential employment in the swine industry and relate it to their personal needs and aspirations; summarize the history of the swine industry; list current breeds of swine and their contribution to the industry; compare the management inputs of the different systems of swine production; select breeding stock based on type, performance records, and pedigrees; develop a breeding stock management plan; compare nutritional requirements of the stages of swine growth; discuss swine facilities and equipment needed for the different phases of swine production; identify the health and sanitation problems of raising swine; describe the market grades of swine; list and compare the methods of marketing swine for the different systems of production; and fit and show swine. Post bulletin board displays featuring topics related to this unit. Make available to students computer programs designed to calculate to costs and profits or losses of hog operations. Learning Activities Participate in a Supervised Agricultural Experience program. Take part in evaluating classes of breeding stock and market hogs. Be active in fitting and showing swine. Describe how to interpret performance data. Label and evaluate meat cuts. Report on caring for piglets, including giving shots, docking tails, clipping needle teeth, notching ears, and castrating. Design your idea of an ideal hog operation. Develop swine rations. Study swine diseases and report findings to the class. Prepare pork products for the class to sample.
