From: DPI Open Enrollment Sent: Tuesday, April 18, 2017 9:27 AM To: Danfield, Jennifer L. DPI Subject: Reminder about Acting on Applications To – District Administrators and Open Enrollment Coordinators From – Jen Danfield, Open Enrollment Consultant Subject – Reminder about Acting on Applications We have received a few emails from districts indicating that they have been asked to act on 2017-18 regular applications now, which is not allowed under open enrollment statute. Per Wis. Stats § 118.51(3)(a)2., a nonresident school board may not act on any applications before May 1. If you have sent out any denial letters before May 1, they are not valid. You will need to send parents a new denial letter after May 1. This also means that you cannot enter any approval or denial decisions into OPAL until May 1st. If you have already entered a decision into OPAL, it is too late to undo that but please refrain from entering any decisions until May 1st at the earliest. Nonresident districts are required to send out approval and denial notices to parents no later than June 9th. If you have any questions, please contact us at openenrollment@dpi.wi.gov or call us at 888- 245-2732, option 2.
