Bureau of Community Nutrition


The Bureau of Community Nutrition is responsible for administering Federal Child Nutrition Programs that serve children and adults in community and school settings. Through partnerships with childcare centers, family day care homes, afterschool programs, adult care centers, private non-profits, camps, and schools. The Bureau works to improve access to nutritious meals and snacks and promote lifelong healthy eating habits.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Program Administration: Oversees the implementation of Federal Community Nutrition Programs for eligible participants in childcare centers, family day care homes, emergency shelters, afterschool programs, adult day care centers, private non-profits, camps, and schools.
  • Program Compliance and Monitoring: Ensures that program sponsors follow federal and state regulations, conduct regular audits and reviews, and provide technical assistance.
  • Training and Technical Support: Delivers professional development, guidance materials, and direct technical assistance to program sponsors to support program compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Community Engagement and Improvement: Promotes program access and increase participation across the state to counter food insecurity and provide access to improved nutrition and wellness.
  • Data Collection and Reporting: Maintains accurate records, submits required reports to the USDA, and state leadership to track program impact and effectiveness.
  • Information Technology and Support: Develops and maintains technology systems that facilitate program participation, monitoring, and reporting.
