National Library Card Sign-up Month: Celebrating the Staff Behind the Card

One little library card can do so much – and that is because an entire library staff stands behind every swipe of that card.

Throughout the month of September, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Bureau of Libraries is celebrating National Library Card Sign-up Month by highlighting all that libraries have to offer and reminding people that a library card is often the key to accessing those resources.

A library card provides free access to a world of knowledge, including books, newspapers, databases, audiobooks, and more. It supports lifelong learning and encourages reading by helping people build reading habits, develop research skills, and strengthen their knowledge. Libraries also enhance communities by connecting people with local services, providing welcoming spaces to gather, and offering programs for people of all ages.

But behind every library card is a dedicated library staff working to make those resources available and useful to their communities. Staff carefully curate collections to meet their community’s needs, search for and connect library users with materials through interlibrary loan, track down the information needed to answer a question at the check-out desk, or even make simple but important repairs, such as fixing a book’s binding.

As we celebrate the many ways a library card can open the door to information, learning, and community, the Bureau of Libraries also wants to recognize and thank Wisconsin’s library staff and volunteers. Their knowledge, care, and dedication are what turn a simple library card into a gateway to so many opportunities.

National Library Card Sign-up Month celebrates the idea everyone should have access to information, learning, and community – and a library card is a simple way to open that door.
