As of the 2025-26 school year, the data element Course Level Characteristic Descriptor describes the nature and difficulty of a course. This helps replace the attribute "rigor level."

Course level characteristic descriptors include, for example:

  • remedial
  • basic
  • honors
  • Advanced Placement (AP)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • dual credit
  • Career and Technical Education (CTE)

In WISEdata Portal, this data element appears where there is course offering information. For example, the "Course Offerings" export (within the "Roster" category) displays course level characteristic descriptors in the following columns, where appropriate:

  • CTE Course
  • AP/IB
  • Rigor Level
