EdTech Vendor Tools
There are different types of EdTech vendor tools. Staff or student information systems (SIS) are the most prominent and the SIS acronym is often used as a synonym for all EdTech tools.
There are other types of EdTech vendor tools that specialize in:
- assessment data
- discipline data
- finance or human resources data
- Xello
A student information system, or SIS, is a software that provides a local education agency services (LEAs) to help manage the large amounts of data schools are required to collect and report based on state and federal laws. LEAs in Wisconsin with statutory data reporting requirements must use a SIS to send their data to the Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
WISEdata Is a Read Only Application
The WISEdata Portal (WDP) application is used to verify that data is pushed from your student information system (SIS) to the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). For more information about how the data flow process works (i.e., how data gets from your school over to DPI), visit the Ed-Fi Credential: Submitting Data to DPI webpage.
Important things to understand about WISEdata Portal:
- WISEdata Portal is a “read-only” or “view-only” application.
- This means that DPI staff cannot change data in WISEdata Portal.
- Data is ‘pushed’ from an LEA’s SIS to the WISEdata Portal. WISEdata Portal does not ‘pull’ data in.
- If you have entered data into your SIS and it is not showing in WISEdata Portal, you may need to do some troubleshooting on a few different levels.
- You may need to queue a manual validation.
- You may need to troubleshoot a connection between your SIS and the Ed-Fi Credential API.
- Find the name and phone number or email of the SIS vendor representative that assists your LEA.
- You can also contact the DPI Partner Support Team by submitting a Help Ticket.
- If you have entered data into your SIS and it is not showing in WISEdata Portal, you may need to do some troubleshooting on a few different levels.
- The data that is visible in WISEdata Portal today will be visible in WISEdash for Districts tomorrow.
- At a glance, Wisconsin has over 2,000 public schools, containing over 800,000 students and over 100,000 teachers and staff. Data is sent to DPI about each of these daily. Processing data of this quantity while also maintaining data security takes time.
Vendor List
There are many vendors who provide SIS tools and services. Schools can select the certified vendor of their preference. Visit the Certified Vendor List webpage to view the vendors who offer student information systems (SISs) and other products that can submit data to WISEdata based on the widely adopted Ed-Fi Data Exchange Standards. This list is not a DPI endorsement of vendors.
DPI cannot endorse specific vendors. However, vendors who do not certify annually with DPI will not be able to submit your school or district data to DPI on your behalf.
Ed-Fi Credential: Submitting Data to DPI

SIS vendor tools cannot fully complete their function of sending data to DPI alone. SIS tools must push school data to DPI using an application programming interface (API). This is the Ed-Fi API. The Ed-Fi Credential application is the DPI's own specific application used to manage the API connection between your vendor tools and WISE (sometimes referred to in shortened form as ‘Ed Cred’). It is what you, the Local Education Agency (LEA), use to control the flow of data to WISE applications.

For detailed information on how the application works and to learn what you need to do at the start of each school year to get your data flowing to DPI, visit the Ed-Fi Credential: User Guide.
