Module 1: Understanding Microaggression

Description
Learn about microaggressions in schools and how they can harm relationships. This module will provide strategies for reducing the likelihood of committing microaggressions as well as strategies for repairing relationships if you do commit a microaggression.

LAUNCH UNDERSTANDING MICROAGRESSIONS MODULE

What to Expect
This module empowers school staff to recognize microaggressions as well as ways to maintain healthy relationships in a multicultural context. This module takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

  • Understand privilege in context
  • How microagressions can harm relationships
  • Learn strategies to reduce microagressions
  • Learn how to repair relationships after committing a microagession
  • Communication strategies: “I” statements
  • How to develop, repair, and maintain healthy relationships in a multicultural context

Module 2: Culturally Responsive Problem Solving: An Evidence Based Approach

Description
Are you wondering how you can help solve student’s difficulties while maintaining cultural responsiveness? Relying on current research, learn about strategies you can use to ensure you are taking a strengths-based approach to accurately identifying a problem that will lead to an effective solution. This is a self-paced module which can be viewed in short segments according to individual need.

  • What is culturally responsive problem solving (CRPS)?
  • Understand the Culturally Responsive Practices Model
  • Traditional problem solving vs. problem solving with a culturally responsive approach
  • Strengths-based vs. deficit-based approach
  • How and why to reframe
  • Changing how we engage in the problem-solving process

This module presents school staff with an evidence-based, culturally responsive approach to problem solving with students. This module takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.

About the Presenter
Dr. Markeda Newell earned her PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is currently the Interim Dean and an Associate Professor in Psychology at the Loyola University Chicago’s School of Education. The focus of her research is on the development, implementation, and evaluation of multicultural and consultation competence among school psychologists and staff.
