Count Dates - Reminder

Friday, September 17, 2021

Dear District Administrators,

The department received a handful of questions about counting students, so I wanted to provide you with a quick reminder of rules around count dates. A student unable to physically attend school on the count date due to a COVID-19 quarantine is treated no differently than any other student unable to attend for medical reasons. The student may be counted if:

  • The district provides virtual or remote instruction to the student on the count date, or
  • The district provides in-person, virtual, or remote instruction on any one day before and any one day after the count date, with no break in enrollment (the “before and after” rule).

No special flexibility is required to count students receiving virtual or remote instruction. Districts have the ability they have always had to count students to whom they are providing virtual or remote instruction.

Sincerely,

John W. Johnson, PhD
Deputy State Superintendent
