Providing safety and educational opportunity

Each student in Wisconsin has a constitutional guarantee to a free public education from the ages of 4 to 20. Schools, however, have a responsibility to make sure they provide a safe place for all students. The Department of Public Instruction provides resources and technical support to reduce the need for students to be removed from the traditional school setting. That includes the promotion of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) for schools.

Schools must follow certain steps, referred to as "due process" to expel a student from school.

Students have a greater chance to succeed when they are part of a safe and supportive school climate.
