Update on Early Warning Systems

Thursday, October 12, 2023

Dear District Administrators,

As you know, DPI has developed two early warning systems to assist schools in identifying students who may be at risk of dropping out of school or who may not be prepared for college and career after high school. The Dropout Early Warning System (DEWS) and the College and Career Readiness Early Warning System (CCREWS) make data available to LEAs via the Early Warning dashboard in WISEdash for Districts.

DPI has decided to pause the continuation of the early warning systems at this time, in order to explore possibilities for developing data tools that meet the current needs of school staff and the students they serve. To that end, DEWS and CCREWS data will no longer be available within WISEdash for districts, effective October 12, 2023.

DPI will keep schools informed as decisions are made about the early warning systems and other data tools available for schools. LEAs should continue to use local data to guide interventions focused on preventing dropouts and ensuring college and career readiness for all students.

If you have any questions about this information, please contact Erin Fath, Director, Policy, Budget, and Research Team, at erin.fath@dpi.wi.gov or (608) 266-2804.

Sincerely,

John W. Johnson, PhD
Deputy State Superintendent
