Event Description

Wisconsin public school observance day required by statute (Wis. Stat. sec. 118.02). This observance day commemorates the end of major hostilities of World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Begun as Armistice Day in 1919, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day, "a day dedicated to world peace," in 1954. The day honors all veterans of the U.S. armed services.

When an observance day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it should be observed on the preceding Friday or the following Monday. The federal holiday for 2021 is Thursday, November 11.

Enacted June 12, 1929, from the 1929 Laws of Wisconsin, Chapter 160.
