Access to State Government Information Made Easy

Tuesday, June 20, 2023

The Wisconsin Document Depository Program makes access to electronic state government information easy and convenient for libraries! Librarians can review lists of recently archived state documents, which are regularly updated, and choose different options for providing access to library users. The following are the three ways distribution lists can be used to enhance a library’s collection.

Upload Catalog Records

Enhance your collection by uploading authoritative full catalog records for individual electronic state documents to your library's online catalog. Library users searching online catalogs have access to the state documents through a persistent URL located in the catalog record that goes directly to the item in the online digital collection.

Use Persistent URLs

Let the Wisconsin Digital Archives provide access to electronic state documents without risk of dead URLs. Use persistent URLs on webpages or in publications to link directly to a state document in the digital collection.

Provide Access to Digital Collections

Add the following digital collections to your libraries’ electronic resources list. Each state document digital collection provides a unique perspective on state government and contains different types of state documents. Each of the digital collections is readily available for libraries to include in their electronic database and resources lists on their webpages and require no login.

  • The Wisconsin Digital Archives contains state documents that describe activities of state government including statistics, reports, and studies published by government agencies in the course of their work and document how government and citizens interact.
  • The State Government Web Archives harvests and archives state government websites using the Archive-It software produced by the Internet Archive. Access to full state agency websites allows users to search and access web content no longer available on the live website.
  • The Legislative Reference Bureau Digital Collections contains LRB, Legislative Audit Bureau, Legislative Council, and Legislative Fiscal Bureau publications and a Mandated Reports to the Legislature collection of reports required by state statute or act.
