MADISON — The Department of Public Instruction will conduct a hearing from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Jan. 28 at department headquarters, GEF 3, Room P41, 125 South Webster Street, Madison, to take public testimony on revisions to rules related to alternative applications for open enrollment.

The proposed modifications will clarify procedures and create flexibility for school districts in handling alternative applications for the open enrollment program. The changes will allow nonresident school districts to approve alternative applications for the current school year from January to July for grades or special education services that do not have space limitations for the following school year. This will make the rule consistent with other provisions that allow nonresident school districts to approve alternative applications for the current school year from July 1 to the third Friday in September for grades or special education services that do not have space limitations established by the school board for the following school year.

Written comments on the proposed rule changes may be made via the department’s form for submitting public comment. Questions or additional testimony on the rules may be sent by email to the department’s administrative rules coordinator, or by U.S. mail to Carl Bryan, administrative rules coordinator, 125 South Webster Street, P.O. Box 7841, Madison, WI 53707-7841.

Written comments received no later than Feb. 7 will be given the same consideration as testimony presented at the hearing. The text of the proposed rules is available on the department’s administrative rules website or the Wisconsin Legislature's Clearinghouse Rules site.
