Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Award Programs
- Teacher Fellowship – Fellowships in the amount of $6,000 are awarded each year to 100 Wisconsin teachers. Each fellow’s school also receives a $6,000 grant. Educators are chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, ability to motivate others and for their leadership and service within and outside the classroom. This is a competitive scholarship.
- Principal Leadership Award – Awards in the amount of $6,000 are awarded each year to 16 Wisconsin principals. Each leader’s school also receives a $6,000 grant. Educators are chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, ability to motivate others and for their leadership and service within and outside the school. This is a competitive scholarship. Principals do not need to be an AWSA member to be eligible for a Leadership Award
Recipient Selection
Fellowship and Leadership Award recipients are selected by a statewide committee composed of civic leaders, representatives of education-related associations, and the program’s co-sponsors: the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, regional Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA), and the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators.

The Herb Kohl Teacher Fellowship recipients are used as the candidate pool from which Wisconsin’s four Teachers of the Year are selected. Educators are chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students and ability to motivate others, and for their leadership and service within and outside of the classroom.
