Herb Kohl Educational Foundation

The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation funds the Student Excellence, Teacher Fellowship, Principal Leadership Award and Student Initiative programs. The purpose of the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Award Program is to recognize outstanding students, teachers and principals and support them in continuing to pursue academic excellence. DPI, the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators (AWSA) and the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation co-administer these programs.

 

Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Award Programs

  • Student Excellence - Excellence Scholarships for $10,000 are awarded each year to 100 graduating high school students. Scholarship recipients are chosen for their demonstrated academic potential, outstanding leadership, citizenship, community service, integrity and other special talents. This is a competitive scholarship.
  • Teacher Fellowship – Fellowships in the amount of $6,000 are awarded each year to 100 Wisconsin teachers. Each fellow’s school also receives a $6,000 grant. Educators are chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, ability to motivate others and for their leadership and service within and outside the classroom. This is a competitive scholarship.
  • Principal Leadership Award – Awards in the amount of $6,000 are awarded each year to 16 Wisconsin principals. Each leader’s school also receives a $6,000 grant. Educators are chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, ability to motivate others and for their leadership and service within and outside the school. This is a competitive scholarship. Principals do not need to be an AWSA member to be eligible for a Leadership Award
  • Student Initiative – Initiative scholarships in the amount of $10,000 are awarded each year to approximately 85 graduating high school students. This scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated a high level of motivation to achieve and have overcome significant personal obstacles or adversity.  High Schools throughout Wisconsin are designated annually to select an Initiative Scholarship recipient.

Recipient Selection

Excellence Scholarship, Fellowship and Leadership Award recipients are selected by a statewide committee composed of civic leaders, representatives of education-related associations, and the program’s co-sponsors: the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, regional Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA), and the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators.

Herb Kohl Teacher Fellowship Recipients Selected as WI Teachers of the Year

The Herb Kohl Teacher Fellowship recipients are used as the candidate pool from which Wisconsin’s four Teachers of the Year are selected. Educators are chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students and ability to motivate others, and for their leadership and service within and outside of the classroom.
