Census 2020 Resources for Schools

Tuesday, January 7, 2020

The United States Census Bureau has created a resource for educators called Statistics in Schools. The site provides teacher-designed materials for educators at all grade levels and subjects, including math, English, history, geography, and social studies, to ensure all students are counted in the 2020 Census.

There are also specific resources for English language learners and adult English as a second language learners with information on how to use them from kindergarten through adulthood.

Teachers can help students explore data related to city and state information such as housing, population, age, sex, race, ethnicity, and geographic location. The teacher guide breaks down which tools are best to use with certain grade levels and how statistics can help make sense of local and statewide information.

Information from the 2020 Census helps determine where some federal funds are distributed for the next 10 years, including school programs such as:

  • Special education

  • Teacher training

  • Technology

  • School lunch assistance

  • Head Start

  • Title I

  • Afterschool programs
