Children coloring images of badgers, violets, and cardinals
Third graders from Mrs. Andrea Dunmore's class from Jackson Elementary in Janesville, Wisconsin

Each year, a class from one school in each state is selected to create one-of-a-kind ornaments to decorate the National Christmas Tree, located on the National Mall in Washington, DC.

This year, Wisconsin's ornaments were made by third grades students in Mrs. Dunmore's class at Jackson Elementary School in Janesville, WI. Students learned about Wisconsin's history and decided to use the state tree (sugar maple), state flower (violet), state bird (robin), state animal (badger), and the state flag as representations in their ornaments. Students used markers and colored pencils to create their designs.

Students learned how to blend with colored pencil and stipple with markers. They made initial sketches, discussed and critiqued, then made adjustments to get their final designs. Jackson is a title 1, SAGE school, and the kids were overjoyed with this opportunity!
