Wisconsin Academic Standards Available For Public Review, Input in Five Subject Areas

Tuesday, January 25, 2022
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is seeking public comment on three drafts of Wisconsin Academic Standards and public input on the review of current standards in two other subject areas.

Wisconsin Academic Standards specify what students should know and be able to do in the classroom. They serve as goals for teaching and learning. Setting high standards enables students, parents, educators, and citizens to know what students should have learned at a given point in time. All Wisconsin Academic Standards serve as a model. Locally elected school boards adopt academic standards in each subject area to best serve their community.

The DPI has a transparent and comprehensive process for reviewing and revising academic standards. The process begins with a notice of intent to review an academic area with a public comment period. Following the public comment period, the Superintendent’s Academic Standards Review Council examines those public comments and recommends whether or not to revise or develop standards in that specific area. The state superintendent authorizes whether or not to pursue a revision or development process. After this step, a state writing committee is formed to work on revision or development of those standards for all grade levels. A draft is then made available for open review to get additional feedback from the public, stakeholders, educators, and the Wisconsin State Legislature, with further review by the council. Finally, the state superintendent then determines adoption of the standards.

Draft Standards Available for Public Comment

The process outlined above has led to a draft set of revised standards for three subject areas: Essential Elements: Mathematics, Essential Elements: English Language Arts, and Nutrition. The Wisconsin Essential Elements are alternate achievement standards for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities that need to be aligned to our Wisconsin standards for English Language Arts Standards and Mathematics (find additional information here). A virtual public hearing on these three draft standards will be held via Zoom from 4-6 p.m. on Feb. 7. To join the public hearing via Zoom, visit https://widpi.zoom.us/j/83476785236 at the time and date of the hearing.
