Coaching: A Cornerstone for Change

Thursday, May 18, 2023

During the pandemic the iconic coaching professional learning series Leadership and Coaching for Transformation Change was put on pause. It did not take long for coaches and leaders across the state to lift this up as a barrier; especially as coaching continues to build as an educational support. The series returned last year, but with little change to the content.

We are thrilled to announce the series will continue! But, with a bit of a facelift. Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, you are invited to participate in the updated and revamped professional development for Wisconsin coaches titled, Coaching: A Cornerstone for Change.

Many readers likely know that Wisconsin utilizes a research-based definition of coaching known as the Coaching Competency Practice Profile (CCPP). This document outlines the coaching practice in a way that is teachable, learnable and doable. The first step in reimagining the learning series was ensuring that it is closely aligned to the CCPP. Now each session of the series aligns to the competencies:

  • Session 1: Relationship Development and the Coach Leader Partnership
  • Session 2: Communication and Coaching Conversation Facilitation
  • Session 3: Knowledge Based Development and Reflective Practice
  • Session 4: Change Facilitation
  • Session 5: Teams and Systems

Another change from last year is that the professional development series will be a hybrid design with the first and third sessions occurring face-to-face. Not only does this hybrid model allow for flexibility in calendars, it also provides an opportunity to grow your network. You will meet coaches from across the state who, like you, are passionate about education and Wisconsin’s learners.

What to expect during the series?

At least half of the content is new. So, even if you’ve participated in this learning before, there will be exciting new research, readings, resources and strategies you will be able to apply to your work immediately.

The first session acknowledges the importance of a strong coach/leader partnership. And, because relationships are so critical, it is strongly recommended that coaches and their administrator attend this first session together. We will collectively engage in coaching systems and vision work.

Each session will hold space for intentional practice of the research and skills explored. Between sessions participants will be expected to read short articles and engage in coaching practice which will be discussed in the following session.
