Census 2020: Self-Response Phase to Close Earlier

Tuesday, September 1, 2020

The United States Census Bureau has adjusted the timeline for the self-response phase. Originally, the phase had been extended to October 31; now, the self-response phase will end on September 30, 2020.

The Wisconsin self-response rate was just 70.9% as of August 26. An accurate census count not only establishes a count of the population, but many educational assistance programs rely on it for funding. Among those is Title I of the Every Student Succeeds Act, which is designed to close achievement gaps and ensure all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education in Wisconsin schools.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction encourages educators and education stakeholders to share reminders about the Census within local contexts to ensure an accurate count.
