Summer 2021 DPI workshops are being planned right now! At the moment, the following is planned, but this may change:

- Support for districts in meeting the new requirements of Act 30 (teaching the Holocaust and Other Genocides). More information coming soon.
- Content webinars on the 2018 Wisconsin Standards for Social Studies, starting with the Economics and Political Science strands. More information coming soon.
Social Studies Virtual Bootcamp 2021
Bootcamp 2021 will focus on Big Picture K-12 social studies curriculum, using the work of Dr. Gholdy Muhammad as a framework. Dr. Muhammad outlines five components of authentic student engagement: Identity, Skill, Intellectual Connection, Criticality, and Joy. Her work goes beyond the general curricular focus on content and skills, adding in the pieces of the social and political context of the students’ communities. Bootcamp is open to any educator, but as the heart of the work this summer is not the individual classroom, it may be most appropriate to small district teams. Bootcamp is 100% free this year, as I don't have to pay for a venue or food!
Due to the virtual nature of Bootcamp this year, there will be three sessions for the main content, with multiple options for breakout sessions and meeting with me to brainstorm. The three sessions will NOT be the same - it will be different content, and at this time, I am hoping to record them, as well. With registration, you will receive a calendar hold for each session, with a Zoom link.
Dates for Bootcamp 2021 are:
Tuesday June 29 from 10am - noon
Monday July 12 from 10am - noon
Monday July 19 from 10am - noon
Registration will close one on June 22, 2021, to ensure time to get information and links to all attendees.
Bootcamp Book Club
This summer, we will be using Dr. Gholdy Muhammad's book "Cultivating Genius: An Equity Framework for Culturally and Historically Responsive Literacy" as one option for a base of K-12 social studies curriculum work. It occurred to me that some professional learning and discussions on the book would support learning across the state. Dr. Muhammad outlines five components of authentic student engagement: Identity, Skill, Intellectual Connection, Criticality, and Joy. Her work goes beyond the general curricular focus on content and skills, adding in the pieces of the social and political context of the students’ communities.
Although anyone is invited to join us, the focus will be on applying Dr. Muhammad's framework to social studies.
The three sessions will NOT be the same - it will be different content. These will not be recorded, to protect the privacy of our attendees. Otherwise, it is available online from between $25 & $36, or check your local library!
