Earlier this month, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction announced it is seeking applicants for the director of the Wisconsin Reading Center, a new position created through 2023 Wisconsin Act 20.
The position will lead work in implementing the law — which reimagined how reading is taught and promotes strengthening literacy learning — across the agency while also supporting school districts. The director will be appointed by the state superintendent with consultation by the Early Literacy Curriculum Council, and will report to the state superintendent and the executive team within the DPI’s Office of the State Superintendent.
The director must have experience or training in the definition of science-based instruction, as outlined in Wis. Stat. Ch. 118.015(1c)(b), and also possess knowledge or experience implementing early reading programming, including coaching, within a school or a district, as well as a working knowledge or understanding of administering and overseeing grants to schools or large organizations. The DPI is seeking candidates who possess experience or training implementing programmatic change, with a special emphasis on people management during periods of change.
Those interested in applying for the position should submit a resume and a cover letter (no more than 750 words) to Early.Reading@dpi.wi.gov. Additional information on the effort to improve literacy in Wisconsin can be found on the DPI’s website.
