Experienced-based Licensure for Technical and Vocational Subjects – Healthcare-Related Occupations – DPI License Number 8011 is the specific PI-34 teacher licensure for health science education in Wisconsin.

Health science courses may be taught by other Wisconsin licensed instructors. The following subject areas include content standards that may align with the Wisconsin Standards for Health Science and, therefore, instructors may be appropriately licensed to teach certain health science courses.

• Family and consumer science education - DPI license numbers 1210, 1215, 1216
• Business and information technology education - DPI license numbers 1250, 1281
• Health education - DPI license number 1910
• Broadfield science - DPI license number 1601
• Biology/life science - DPI license number 1605

Perkins Funding for Health Science Programs

Carl Perkins funds can only be used for expenses related to CTE courses with appropriately licensed CTE teachers. For Carl Perkins funding to be approved and used on expenses related to health science programming, the following DPI CTE license numbers qualify for use of funds: DPI license numbers 8011, 1210, 1215, 1216, 1250, and 1281.

Perkins funding is meant to support students’ academic and technical skill development within a career pathway. Coding it as a CTE course and having it taught by a licensed CTE teacher demonstrates the intentionality and integrity of providing students with a quality CTE health science program.

Examples of Course and Licensure Configurations in HSE Programs

The program configuration examples below may be taught by appropriately licensed teachers, which allows for flexibility within districts. Because health science course content aligns with the standards of the subject area for which the teacher is licensed, the teacher is appropriately licensed to teach a health science course. For example, family and consumer science standards and science standards align with the content in health science courses; therefore, a family and consumer science or science teacher is appropriately licensed to teach certain health science courses.

All CTE health science courses offered must align to the Wisconsin Standards for Health Science despite the subject area for which the teacher is licensed. The local district assures this alignment. Please note these are examples; other configurations are possible.
