The start of a new school year is a busy time for all our CTE educators, but here’s a deadline you may want to learn more about. September 16, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. is the deadline for your principal to nominate up to two students for the 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program in the following categories:
- Students who have overcome special challenges or hurdles while still achieving academic success
- Students who have demonstrated ability and accomplishment in Career and Technical Education fields. This includes high academic achievement, engaged in work-based learning and active in a career and technical student organization.
We know that the start of a new school year is busy for your principal, too. If your school has an outstanding CTE student who you feel deserves consideration for this award, you may wish to follow up by:
- Touching base with your principal.
- Reminding him or her about the notification and electronic submission form that were emailed to all Wisconsin high school principals on August 21.
- Encouraging the principal to review the award criteria outlined in the original email and nominate a student from your school. The nomination form is simple and will take very little time to complete.
The Wisconsin Career & Technical Education (CTE) students and teachers who were honored previously in association with this program are displayed below:

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.
