Wisconsin Accounting Students Rank Tops in the Nation!

Tuesday, August 21, 2018

Did you that the Wisconsin Job Center website currently displays over 500 vacant positions seeking to connect our talented students with over 500 opportunities associated with accounting.  The in-demand occupational area is one of the career pathways that is a strength for many of our high school and post-secondary programs.  With the support of state organizations such as the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation and the national Start Here, Go Places program featured by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) , Wisconsin students are making headlines for their success over the summer.

In mid-June five individuals from Wisconsin made state news by ranking among the highest cumulative scores on the 2017 Certified Public Accountant examination and received the AICPA 2017 Elijah Watt Sells Award.  Later in June, the following students competed at the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference in Baltimore with Catherine Wu from Madison Memorial High School being recognized in the top ten nationally in Accounting II:

  • Accounting I: Ryan Unruh (Greendale) & Jazlyn Sebastian (Sauk Prairie)
  • Accounting II:  Cory Haupt (Plymouth), Samantha Meyer (Plymouth), Logan Jennings (Two Rivers), & Catherine Wu (Madison Memorial)

As students examine future opportunities in the accounting profession, educators can direct individuals to a wide-range of resources highlighted in an interactive digital version of the CPA2b, job shadow at a wide range of businesses associated with a certified public accountant, or submit a speaker request form to the WICPA to bring an accountant to your school.

Additionally, the Wisconsin Restaurant Association Education Foundation is hosting its first annual ProStart Career and Industry Expo for Wisconsin schools on November 7, 2018 to showcase industry and career connections in a wide range of business related opportunities including:  Restaurant Owners, Culinary Chefs, Finance/Accountants, Marketing Professionals, HR Professionals, Sales Managers, Hotel Managers, Event Planners, Catering Business Owners, Pastry Chefs, Sports Service Managers, Club Managers, Distributors, Equipment Suppliers, Food Manufacturers, Nutritionists, Food Scientists, Food Photographers, Food Stylists, Corporate Trainers, Business Consultants, Sommelier, and Barista.

Educators interested in learning more about how accounting educational opportunities can support a wide-range of career opportunities should plan to attend the Friday, November 9, 2018 Educator Accounting Symposium sponsored by the WICPA Educational Foundation.  Attendees may apply for a grant on behalf of their school to promote accounting career awareness and support innovating accounting education activities.
