Computer Science Education Week: December 5 - 11, 2022

Computer Science Education week was first launched in 2009 as a joint effort by numerous companies and organizations. We celebrate Computer Science Education week (CS Ed Week) each year during the week of Grace Hopper’s birthday (December 9, 1906), who invented the first compiler and coined the term “bug” (an error in a program) after removing an actual moth from a computer in 1947. The first Hour of Code challenge was held during CS Ed Week in 2013 with a focus on engaging students to complete short programming tutorials. This year over 180 countries with 45,750 events are registered to participate. We encourage districts to document their Hour of Code event/activity and contribute to the global movement. Individuals can register their Hour of Code event/activity here.

This year, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is excited to provide resources to help support schools and families in career exploration, exploring current and emerging topics, and participating in an Hour of Code supporting computer science. While CS Ed Week is only one week in December, we are providing resources all month long for student engagement in a wide variety of topics ranging from careers to coding to artificial intelligence. Wisconsin schools continue to grow in offering computer science courses in 66% of high schools for the 2020-2021 school year. Here at DPI, we are committed to providing resources and assistance to districts to offer equitable, accessible, and age-appropriate CS content at all grade levels. DPI has partnered with the CSforALL SCRIPT workshop to assist districts in setting short-and long-term goals surrounding the growth of PK-12 CS content. If your district is interested in learning more about the SCRIPT workshop, please contact your local CESA.

Bernard Marr, a Forbes Business and Technology contributor, recently stated, "The jobs of the future will require very different skills than the jobs of the past. As machines get better and better at performing routine tasks, jobs that require humans skills such as creativity, empathy, and adaptability will become even more important."

Here at DPI, we are committed to ensuring all students, teachers, and districts have the skills, knowledge, and tools they need to continue their path of offering equitable and accessible CS opportunities and experiences at all grade levels. Thank you to Dr. Jill Underly, State Superintendent of Public Instruction for declaring December 5-11, 2022 as Computer Science Education Week throughout the State of Wisconsin. Download the proclamation to display in your school, organization, or business.
