Building Community Based Summers (BCBS)

Building Community Based Summers empowers libraries to build summer services by centering and designing with community. This helps to ensure those experiencing marginalization engage with library services in new ways. The BCBS framework empowers library staff to weave community voices into summer services and programming by exploring:

  • The Why of Summer Services
  • Letting Go of Tradition
  • Connecting with Community Voices
  • Summer Services Impact

Foundations of Wisconsin Librarianship

This annual workshop is specifically structured to be most beneficial to public library staff new (three years or less) to serving youth in Wisconsin libraries and provides an introduction to essential skills, resources, and strategies for working in public libraries. New school library media specialists and public library staff new to serving youth spend time working separately, focusing specifically on their role in each institution. Opportunities to foster connections are available throughout the workshop to join together to begin networking and building relationships for future collaborations. Past guest presenters have included speakers from the CCBC, PBS Education, and Wisconsin Science Festival.

The three-day in-person workshop is held annually in late July or early August. Dates and registration for the 2026 workshop will be announced in the spring of 2026.

Teen Internship Program

Learn how to apply to be part of the 2026 Teen Internship Program!

  • Selected libraries will receive funding to hire a paid summer teen intern who reflects voices and perspectives within their communities.

  • Interns will design and lead a community-focused Connected Learning Project that highlights and showcases their skills, interests, and experiences.

  • Library mentors will engage with and support teens while also opening career pathways into the field of librarianship.

Overall, this was a good experience and I’m glad we applied for it. This experience gave mentors and teens the ability to learn new skills, explore ideas, and grow. - 2025 Participating Library Mentor

I think the internship was very well-balanced. I assisted other people through programming but also worked independently on my CLP. The program is designed in a very supported and adaptable way that makes it unique to each intern and mentor. - 2025 Participating Teen Intern

Up to $2500 in funding is available for each of the Wisconsin public libraries chosen to participate in the program that runs from June 1 to August 31, 2026. This is expected to be a competitive process, and not all applications will be accepted into the program.

Registration to attend the 10 a.m. January 30, 2026, informational webinar to learn how to apply is now open The application period opens Friday, January 30, 2026 at 1 p.m. and closes Friday, February 13, 2026 at 4 p.m. Preview the application..

Collection Development Resources

One of the many ways that public libraries support the needs of their communities is by providing well-rounded collections of print, audio, and visual materials. Along with book journals, such as School Library Journal, reading lists, and awards and honors lists are another useful tool for developing robust youth collections.
