New Report Shows WI Principal Ratings Measure Critical Aspects of Principal Effectiveness

Wednesday, January 3, 2018

Research has consistently demonstrated that teaching quality represents the largest in-school influence on student achievement. Principal leadership is critical in creating conditions that attract, develop, and retain teaching talent.

External researchers from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee reviewed the results from a statewide survey of teachers to examine evidence of the validity of the Wisconsin Framework for Principal Leadership (WFPL) ratings assigned to principals. The study analyzed data from 159 Wisconsin schools across 35 school districts.

The findings suggest that the EE principal evaluation process results in principal ratings that reflect critical aspects of principal effectiveness. Principals rated as more effective according to the WFPL had teachers who believed their principal was a more effective leader, had more trust in their principal, felt that their principal was more qualified, and reported that the performance feedback they received was of higher quality and was more accurate.
