Attempt Status Descriptor: Roster

Roster icon

Attempt Status Descriptor indicates whether a student has been enrolled in a section for the minimum amount of time to receive an outcome.

Value Use
Sufficient

Indicates that a student has been enrolled in the section for the minimum amount of time to receive an outcome. If Sufficient is sent for a student in grade 9-12, you must also submit a grade for the student.

If a student receives a grade for a section, the attempt status descriptor is Sufficient.

Insufficient

Indicates that a student has not been enrolled in the section for the minimum amount of time to receive an outcome for the course. For example, use Insufficient when a student withdraws from a course before the minimum amount of time required to receive an outcome, or exits enrollment before that time.

If a student does not receive a grade for a section, the attempt status descriptor is Insufficient.

USES: This data element ensures that grades are required for the correct students.

FAQs, Details, and Points to Note

  1. Submitting Attempt Status: For most student information system (SIS) options, attempt status is scripted and does not need to be submitted manually. If you're unsure whether you need to enter and submit this value yourself, contact your SIS vendor. The SIS should not submit courses to WISEdata that a student was enrolled with the intent of earning a grade but did not earn a grade (such as if the student transferred or dropped out during the term). The attempt status is available in case the SIS sends those courses and cannot remove the student section association.
  2. Attempt Status for Earlier Grades: Final grades are only required for students in grades 9-12. However, you should still submit this data element as usual for students in grades below 9-12.
  3. Students Who Withdraw and Rejoin a Section: If a student withdraws from a section, then later rejoins and receives a grade, two section associations are submitted for the student, each with a separate begin and end date. The first should have an attempt status of Insufficient, and the second should have an attempt status of Sufficient.
  4. Students Auditing a Course: Roster records for students auditing courses should not be submitted to WISEdata. If a district sends students who are auditing courses, then the Performance Base Conversion Type can be submitted as "Not graded" and the Attempt Status as "Sufficient."
