Behavior Detailed Description: Discipline

State and federal law require expulsion for a period of not less than one year for any student who brings a firearm to school. A school board may modify this requirement on a case-by-case basis, so if no expulsion is issued following a firearm-related incident, schools should send in this Behavior Detailed Description to explain why there was not an expulsion.

Please double check the behavior and/or discipline actions (removal) entered. This description should be submitted only for incidents where (1) at least one behavior is one of the firearms types and (2) at least one action is associated to the student-incident pair, but no action for that student-incident pair is an expulsion type. For firearm-related incidents meeting the above criteria, this description must provide the reason why the student did not receive the mandatory expulsion.

USES: This data element assists with tracking behavior types and statistics on weapons in schools.
