Behavior Detailed Description: Discipline
Behavior Detailed Description data element is required to explain the reason why there was not an expulsion for a student bringing a firearm to school. State and federal law require expulsion for a period of not less than one year for any student who brings a firearm to school.
A school board may modify this requirement on a case-by-case basis.
If no expulsion is issued following a firearm-related incident, schools explain the reason in the Behavior Detailed Description.
Please confirm the behavior and/or discipline actions (removal) entered.
This description should be submitted only for incidents where:
- at least one submitted Behavior Descriptor is one of the firearms types and
- the Discipline Action action for the student with that Behavior Descriptor is not an expulsion type.
Behavior Detailed Descriptor is a required data element for all firearms incidents.
USES: This data element assists with tracking behavior types and statistics on weapons in schools.
