WKCE Data Summaries: Scale Score, Standards Performance, Item Analysis, Extended Writing

State, district and school disaggregated summaries are available for downloading from this Web page. WKCE local disaggregated data file/display options provided at the DPI Website were created using the the data contained in these tab-delimited files.

The tab-delimited files are included in one zipped self-extracting file for each year. Each self-extracting file is approximately 1.5 - 3.0 MB, and contains state, district and school summary and disaggregated data.

The Scale Score Summary provides data about the distribution of scale scores earned by students taking WKCE subject area tests. The report presents two types of information: mean scale scores and their standard deviations and local percentiles.

The Standards Performance Summary reports your students' performance on the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examinations (WKCE) by Wisconsin content standard. Each WKCE subject area test measures student learning with respect to content standards in that subject. Usually there are several content standards that are assessed in one WKCE subject area test.

Disaggregated State Standards Performance Summary Grades 4, 8, and 10:

This Item Analysis Summary by Standard shows student performance by Wisconsin content standard as indicated by raw score points earned on WKCE test items covering that content standard. Raw score points for both selected-response and constructed-response items are added together and summarized by student group. A small difference between "Points Possible" and "Average Points of Students Tested" suggests that students found the set of items measuring a content standard relatively easy; a large difference suggests that the students found these items relatively difficult.

The Extended Writing Sample by Student Group shows how your students performed compared to other groups on the WKCE extended writing sample and on WSAS alternate assessments (WAA) measuring writing. WKCE extended writing sample is a statewide standardized test taken by nearly all students. The WAA is taken in lieu of WKCE by certain students with special needs.

Disaggregated State Writing Summary Reports:

After downloading, double-click on the file. The zipped file will automatically unzip creating a separate file for each tested grade. Each grade level file is very large because there are over 2,000 public schools and over 400 school districts in Wisconsin. Results by race/ethnicity and other student groups within each school and district are included. Unzipped file sizes range from 2 MB to 10 MB. {C}

Due to the number of rows in each file, you will need to select software that can handle up 40,000 rows of data. More recent versions of Excel and Access, for example, can handle files of this size, but older versions cannot.

Other Useful Information

To protect student privacy, results are not reported in every row of these files.

Demographic data contained in these files are the data reported by school districts and were not audited by the testing contractor or the Department of Public Instruction. In order to reduce the data collection burden, default demographic codes were used when student data were hand-gridded if the vast majority of students statewide were in a specific demographic category. For example, districts were only required to hand-grid data for "students with disabilities." All students not marked as students with disabilities were automatically coded "nondisabled." No default codes were used for race/ethnicity. Missing race/ethnicity codes were reported as "missing."
