Start the Day with Fruits and Vegetables

Celebrate National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month by starting your day with fresh veggies. Try tasty Golden Squash Hotcakes for breakfast. Watch the CACFP Cooking Video: Golden Squash Hotcakes Ages 6-18 and download the recipes with portions for Children Ages 3 to 5 and Children Ages 6 to 18.

Nutrition Education Connection

Try these activities with children:

  • Get kids moving with the "Crookneck Squash Skip," an activity from the garden-themed Grow It, Try It, Like It! nutrition education kit for children ages 3-5 years.
  • Play a farm to plate matching game with the Grow It, Try It, Like It! Cards, which show pictures of fruits and vegetables that are growing, and ready-to-eat.
  • Color the summer squash in this Nibbles for Health Newsletter, one in a series of colorful and engaging nutrition newsletters for parents of young children.

USDA Child Nutrition Program operators can request free printed copies of certain Team Nutrition materials, while supplies last, on the Team Nutrition Ordering Webpage.

  • Summer squash is in season during the summer. Fruits and vegetables may cost less when they are in season.
  • Choose firm squash with no wrinkled skin or soft spots.
  • Summer squash can be stored for up to 2 days at room temperature and up to 5 days in the refrigerator. Wash just before using.
  • There are many types of summer squash, including chayote, cousa, crookneck, pattypan, and zucchini.

Updates from the DPI School Nutrition Team
 

Reminder: Upcoming School Nutrition Summer Training (SNST)

Our first in-person summer training session in four years is coming soon! The DPI School Nutrition Team will host a variety of school food service and school meal administration Classes at Northcentral Technical College in Wausau from July 17-20, 2023.

The last day to Register for the SNST Session in Wausau is Monday, July 10. There is a $10 non-refundable registration fee per person, so please have your credit card ready.

Many classes have reached capacity and waitlists have been started. If you are no longer able to attend SNST classes, please email the Training Team so we are able to admit waitlisted attendees.

Final confirmation emails will be sent to those registered for each class on Wednesday, July 12, and will include logistics, class details, and presentation materials and resources via a shared folder on Google Drive should you wish to print them ahead of time.
