USDA NSLP Equipment Grant

Overview

The purpose of Equipment Assistance Grants is to distribute funding allocations provided by the Consolidated Appropriations Act. State agencies competitively award equipment assistance grants to eligible School Food Authorities (SFAs) participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).

These funds will allow SFAs to purchase equipment to serve healthier meals that meet the updated meal patterns, with emphasis on more fruits and vegetables in school meals, improve food safety, and expand access.

State agencies must award these grants via a competitive grant process to SFAs, giving priority to high need schools (i.e., schools in underserved areas, schools with limited access to other resources, and age of food service equipment).

FY 2020 NSLP Equipment Assistance Grant

It is time to start evaluating your equipment needs! USDA has released USDA Memo SP 17-2020, regarding the Fiscal Year 2020 NSLP Equipment Assistance Grant for SFAs. USDA awarded Wisconsin $399,042 to distribute to SFAs.

New this year:
  • Each SFA can request a maximum total of $25,000 for up to two pieces of equipment. Each piece of equipment cannot be lower than $1,000.
  • USDA has not mandated priority be given to awarded schools based on percentage of students qualifying for free and reduced-price meals.
  • All public school districts, private schools, and Residential Child Care Institutions (RCCI) are eligible to apply if they participate in the NSLP. Additionally, eligibility for this grant is extended to any SFA with a previously approved State agency agreement on file to operate the NSLP (per 7 CFR 210.9(b)), and that would otherwise be operating NSLP in SY 2020-2021, while utilizing the flexibilities granted under the current SFSP/SSO Nationwide Waivers.

Application Packet

Instructions

Step 1: Download the Equipment Grant Application and the Equipment Grant Specification Sheet above.

Step 2: Fill out one Equipment Assistance Grant Specification Sheet (PI-6208) for each piece of equipment being requested.
  • Each SFA can request a maximum total of $25,000 for up to two pieces of equipment. Each piece of equipment cannot be lower than $1,000.
Step 3: Fill out the Equipment Assistance Grant Application (PI-6201-2).
  • Be sure to list the most needed piece of equipment first. Include all the schools that will be serviced by the requested piece of equipment.
Step 4: After filling out the Equipment Assistance Grant Specification Sheet (PI-6208) and Equipment Assistance Grant Application (PI-6201-2) electronically, save the file to your computer, and then attach the files to an email and send to DPIEquipGnt@dpi.wi.gov
  • Documents should not be scanned or mailed as hard copies. Applications and specification sheets must be submitted by email by November 20, 2020. Retain a copy of the application for your files.
Part Two

DPI staff will review the Equipment Assistance Grant Application and Specification Sheet(s). After review, an email will be sent to each SFA indicating if they are eligible to proceed with obtaining bids and how to proceed or if the SFA is not eligible for an Equipment Grant.
